With the hat trick, Argentina and France levelled their scores. But France was thrown out during penalties giving Argentina an edge against its opponent.

It was a disappointment and sorrow for French fans as their team came so close but ultimately failed - to win the World Cup.

Argentina, who had lost their lead twice during the match, finally got their hands on the trophy for the first time since 1986, after Martinez had saved Kingsley Coman's spot-kick and Aurelien Tchouameni sent his effort wide.
