Mystery surrounds the murder of a 28-year-old woman whose body was found lying in a pool of blood in her rented house in Homa Bay town.

According to the police, the body of Mary Kwamboka Ogechi was discovered by her friend and neighbour at around 11 am on Sunday.

Ogechi worked at a private health facility in Rodi Kopany town centre, within Homa Bay Town constituency, police and her neighbours said.

The motive of the murder is yet to be known, police said.

The neighbour told the police that she became suspicious when she went to visit her friend only to find the door locked from the outside.

The neighbour told police she peeped through the window and saw the lifeless body of her friend lying in a pool of blood, and that is when she raised alarm.

Police were called to the scene and established the woman was murdered.

Homa Bay County Directorate of Criminal Investigation Officer (DCIO) Abed Kavoo said the deceased may have been stabbed to death by an unknown person but who was known to her.

He said they suspect the killer was in the house before he or she killed her and escaped.

“We suspect the murder may have been carried out by her boyfriend,” he said.

He added the boyfriend has gone into hiding and could not be traced by Sunday. Efforts to trace him were ongoing.

Police said the deceased woman had deep cuts on her neck and face indicating that she was stabbed with a kitchen knife before the assailant locked the door from outside and disappeared.

Police recovered a kitchen knife stained with blood at the scene.

A team of detectives is pursuing the suspect to establish the motive.

Such domestic murder incidents have been on the rise amid efforts to address them.

The body of the deceased was taken to Homa Bay County Hospital mortuary pending autopsy as part of the probe.
