Wheels of Justice: Court cases lined up for the day

In Summary

•Chania to know whether she will be released on bail by the Kiambu high court.

•Eight police officers from the disbanded Special Services Unit of the DCI will be arraigned at Kahawa Law Court.

Kiambu politician Gladys Chania who was charged with the murder of her husband will on Thursday know whether she will be released on bail by the Kiambu high court.

Chania was charged alongside her farmhand Morris Kamau for the murder of her late husband businessman George Mwangi.

Chania and Kamau have denied the charges and they pleaded with the court to release them on bail after the prosecution opposed to their release on bail.

The state had argued that Chania is a flight risk because she had worked in the US and had applied for a visa in August.

The prosecution also told Justice Mary Kasango that if she releases the two accused persons would interfere with witnesses and evidence.

The court also heard that the late Mwangi’s girlfriend Lucy Muthoni had reported to the police that she was being intimidated and threatened by Chania.

Before her arrest, Chania had reported Muthoni to the police implicating her in the disappearance of her husband which police later discovered was scheme by Chania to cover up the crime.

The state also argued that the two accused should be denied bail for their safety as emotions are still high within the family of the deceased and the matter is of public interest and the state does not have the machinery to protect the accused person from public uproar.

However, Chania’s lawyers opposed the application and pleaded with the court to release the two on bail, arguing that she is not a flight risk and has a place of abode.

Elsewhere, eight police officers from the disbanded Special Services Unit of the DCI will on Thursday be arraigned at Kahawa Law Court after being detained for 21 days.

The court will rule whether they will be charged or not in a case they are suspected of being behind the mysterious disappearance of two Indian nationals Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan and Mohamed Zaid Sami Kidwai and their taxi driver Nicodemus Mwania whose bodies were found in the Aberdare Mountain.

The suspects are Joseph Mwenda Mbaya, David Chepcheng Kipsoi, Stephen Luseno Matunda, Paul Njogu Muriithi, Simon Muhuga Gikonyo, Peter Muthee Gachiku, Francis Muendo Ndonye, John Mwangi Kamau and Joseph Kamau Mbugua.
