Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has commended the decision by the Nairobi County Government to revoke licences for nightclubs located in residential areas.

City Hall said on Friday it has cancelled licences for the establishments in residential areas following an uproar from the public.

It said henceforth, no licences will be issued to nightclubs in those areas save for those in the Central Business District.

Alai who has been at the forefront of calling out the clubs for being a nuisance in residential areas due to noise pollution lauded the move.

"We are winning this war. We don’t start a war we can’t win. Thank you governor Johnson Sakaja," he said in a statement shortly after acting county secretary Jairus Musumba announced the revocation.

Musumba said the nightclubs located in residential areas can continue operating as bars and restaurants but ensure they keep the volume of music at a minimum.

"Specifically, playing of music must stop by 10 pm," Musumba said.

Alai said at last, city residents in areas adjusted to nightclubs will have peaceful nights.

"We are giving the family peace in residential areas. No more noise, open prostitution and drug dealing in residential areas," the ward rep said.

In early October, Alai traded jabs with TV Presenter Trevor Ombija on Twitter after the journalist said he would soundproof the home of a resident who complained that the noise from his club in Kileleshwa was causing her sleepless nights.

In early October, TV Presenter Trevor Ombija was roasted online after he offered to soundproof a resident's house to save her the nuisance caused by the noise from his nightclub.

"We reduced our volume completely, all other neighbours were okay with our attempts, except her so I offered to go the extra mile of soundproofing as a last resort, but she still refused."

Alai shared the video and poked holes in the remarks by the journalist.

"If you want to see the madness in the entertainment industry in this country, see this. The owner of a noisy entertainment joint in Kileleshwa offering to soundproof homes," Alai tweeted.

"Trevor Ombija, if you are the noisemaker, you shut your mouth. You don’t offer to seal our ears. Noise pollution must be contained," lawyer Nelson Havi added.

Earlier, County director of liquor Hesborn Agwena announced that at least 43 entertainment joints in Nairobi would be closed due to noise pollution.
