14 suspected members of criminal gang arrested in Kakamega

Police said it was formed to avenge three robbery suspects subjected to mob justice.

Security officers have arrested 14 suspected gang members believed to be responsible for spate of criminal activities in Kakamega.

The members of "Mbogi La Izraim Territory", were arrested following a two-day operation by the officers aimed at ending vandalism and gangs in the area.

A statement released on Tuesday by the DCI, said the the operation launched on Sunday and led by a team of police from Kakamega and the Directorate's officers resulted in the arrest of 10 of the suspected members.

"After investigative interviewing, four more suspects were nabbed yesterday (Monday) in different locations within the township," the statement said.

The officers recovered three get-away motorcycles, metal bars, bloodstained machetes, clothing and assorted electronics including mobile phones.

Police said the gang made up of young people, which mostly attacked market place and late night pubs' night guards, was constituted two months ago.

In the gruesome attacks, the suspects stole nothing but left their victims dead or mutilated.

Over 10 murder and assault causes linked to the syndicate were reported on diverse dates between October and November.

Three murders were reported on November 17  and 19.

On November 17, a security guard at Club 2000 within Kambi Somali, John Mulama ,58, was attacked and murdered at his place of work.

The group then proceeded to Amalemba bus Stage where they are suspected to have killed DEE's Pub guard, Festo Iluma, 59.

On the night of November 19, the gang is believed to have killed a 5th year student at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.

Patrick Kipkosgei was murdered in cold blood at Mahiakhalo in Bukhungu location.

Another student, a first year at the same school, Isaiah Kiprono, survived an attack by the group, when he yelled for help prompting them to flee.

Kiprono got away with several cuts after the machete-wielding gang accosted him while opening his house.

Preliminary investigations have so far revealed that "Mbogi La Izraim Territory" was formed to avenge three robbery suspects, who were previously cornered and subjected to mob justice.

"The gang believes watchmen informed on them, hence becoming the major targets," police said.

Kakamega Law Courts has granted detectives custodial orders to hold the suspects for 21 days, as investigation continues.
