Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei now wants the government to stop the importation of maize until it has mopped out 2022 crops.

He said there is no need to import maize because farmers are currently harvesting maize in Rift Valley.

Cherargei spoke after Investments, Trade and Industry CS Moses Kuria said the government will allow the importation of duty-free maize for the next six months.

In a statement on Friday, the senator wants the government to stop lowering maize prices because it does not match the input of maize farmers.

"Our Rift Valley farmers are currently harvesting maize, the importation of maize should stop until the government has mopped up all this year's crops," he said.

"Avoid lowering prices that don't match the inputs incurred by maize farmers."

The CS said that the government has allowed the importation of GMO and non-GMO maize into the country for six months.

"Given the food situation in the country, I shall be signing instruments to allow duty-free imports of GMO and non-GMO maize for the next 6 months," Kuria said on Thursday.

Kuria said the directive on the importation of GMO maize will help mitigate the food situation in the country.
