National Assembly clerk Samuel Njoroge has refuted reports that they plan to send Members of Parliament to Qatar to watch the World Cup.

According to Njoroge, he has not received any such request as the National Assembly's accounting officer.

He said that as Parliament, they have been working to cut down on unnecessary spending.

"We are not aware of any request to send members to Qatar and in any case, we are implementing austerity measures, some of which may not allow us to spend money on a venture like this," Njoroge said.

The clerk's remarks follow reports that parliament plans to send at least 15 MPs led by Speaker Moses Wetang'ula to Qatar for the World Cup.

The delegation will also include other parliamentary staff.

According to the source aware of the ongoing plans, the team has sought authorisation from the Speaker’s office to facilitate the trip immediately after the East Africa Legislative Assembly games that start next week.

The MPs, the reports said will have all their expenses, including airfare, accommodation and daily allowances, footed by you, the taxpayer.

Parliamentary sources intimated to the Star that the MPs, representing various sporting activities, will leave the country after recess to enjoy the football extravaganza.

Suba South MP Caroli Omondi had publicly confirmed that he will be in the delegation to Qatar alongside Speaker Wetang'ula.

In 2018, a delegation of 20 MPs attended the World Cup in Russia, triggering a public uproar.

Upon their return, the lawmakers plagiarised sports websites to compile their report on their World Cup experience.
