A video of an OCS directing members of the public to lynch murder suspects has elicited mixed reactions among civil societies.

The officer whose identity could not be immediately established is heard telling a public forum in the undated video that the law allows the public to lynch notorious suspects.

Muhuri said the officers' acts do not reflect the Constitution.

“We are saddened by the viral clip. This is against human rights. Kenya has a constitution that must be followed,” they said.

The organisation urged Ipoa and the Ministry of Interior to intervene and look into the matter.

“We want the officer sacked immediately. If he enjoys seeing people killed, then he is a danger to society,” they said.

“We also want the OCS to be arraigned in court.”

The organisation said if the state won't arrest the officer, they shall mobilise the public to go and arrest the OCS and take him to the court.

Haki Afrika said the officer needs to learn the Constitution.

“If an officer who is supposed to maintain law and order makes these types of comments, then it will bring a situation where we have lawlessness,” Haki Africa said.

“We condemn this nature and are calling for action against the police officer who uttered the words.”

The organisation said the officer should apologise and be restrained.

“The fact that the officer is a senior security officer, we know the level of influence the comments can have on the public,” Haki Africa said.

“The law is very clear on how a suspect is to be treated and as Haki Afrika, we are calling for all suspects to be arraigned in court and face the law.”
