Social media platform, Twitter, has announced that it will label verified high profile accounts under its newly introduced subscription plan.

Twitter's current system of using a blue badge to confirm an account’s authenticity will be revoked for those who will not pay a monthly fee of $7.99.

The subscription is part of changes introduced by new Twitter owner Elon Musk.

According to AP, the platform will now add an "Official" label to select accounts that will be deemed high profile.

"Not all previously verified accounts will get the ‘Official’ label and the label is not available for purchase," Twitter employee Esther Crawford who has been working on the changes said.

The 'Official' label will be grey in colour, according to Twitter and will also fit in both light and dark modes.

This came after experts noted that paying for verification would make it available for everyone and it would be easier for individuals with intentions to impersonate.

The platform’s current verification system has been in place since 2009 and was created to ensure high-profile and public-facing accounts are who they say they are.

The monthly subscription also include bonus features, such as fewer ads and the ability to have tweets given greater visibility than those coming from non-subscribers.
