Trade CS Moses Kuria is currently presiding over a high-level  meeting between Kenyan businesspersons and their South African counterparts.

The meeting at Kenyatta International Convention Centre was convened to provide a platform for the business community from the two countries to foster partnerships.

Participants will exchange views and develop measures to strengthen trade relations and investment opportunities for both countries.

South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa is in the country for talks with his host President Uhuru Kenyatta.

They are expected to hold a joint media conference at State House, Nairobi.

The meeting comes barely a year after Kenya and South Africa signed eight Memoranda of Understanding that seek to enhance and broaden bilateral relations, trade and investments.

The signing ceremony was presided over by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta Ramaphosa on November 24, 2021.

The agreements were an outcome of discussions reached during the Joint Commission of Cooperation (JCC) held in Nairobi in August 2021.

It reviewed the status of bilateral relations, put in place mechanisms for enhancing the relations and undertook negotiations on bilateral instruments for cooperation.

On Trade and Investments, Uhuru and Ramaphosa agreed that there is need to increase the volume of trade between the two countries that has averaged over 580 million US dollars and which is largely in favour of South Africa.

Kenya and South Africa have enjoyed cordial and fraternal relations since the restoration of full diplomatic ties in 1994 when resident Diplomatic Missions were opened in the respective capitals.

They also signed the Agreement on the Joint Commission for Cooperation in 2007, establishing a framework for political consultation.
