Kenya's footballing world has plunged into another controversy after the Football Kenya Federation National Executive Committee nullified last season's leagues and said no team will be promoted or relegated.

In a statement on Wednesday, FKF general secretary Barry Otieno said the resolution was guided by FKF and FIFA rules, regulations and statues, and rulings rendered by the Sports Dispute Tribunal on cases filed regarding the 2021/2022 league season.

"The 2021/2022 FKF Premier League, National Super League, Women Premier League, Men's Division One and Women's Division One leagues will not be recognised and have been declared null and void," Otieno said.

He, however, said the 2021/2022 Division Two, Regional and County leagues will be recognised and their decisions upheld.

The above leagues, he said, will promote and relegate clubs in their respective tiers in alignment with the outcome of last season's games.

"The men's and women's Division One leagues will be expanded for the season 2022/2023 to include teams promoted from the FKF Division Two and women regional leagues respectively," Otieno said.

The SG further said the men's and women's Division One leagues will be regularised in the 2023/2024 league season.

He also announced that the 2022/2023 FKF Premier League will start on November 19 while National Super League will kick off on November 26, 2022.

"Kick off dates for the FKF Women Premier League, Women Division One League and Men's Division One league be December 3, 2022," Otieno said.

Kenya's football has been stoked with controversy since it was banned by FIFA on February 25 following its decision to disband FKF over alleged misappropriation of funds.

Former Sports CS Amina Mohamed on November 11 last year disbanded the Nick Mwendwa-led body and installed a Caretaker Committee.

She appointed Retired Justice Aaron Ringera to lead the new team with journalist Lindah Oguttu as the head of the secretariat.

Mwendwa was arrested on two separate occasions, charged with graft before he stepped aside.

Kenya's suspension was, however, lifted recently after FIFA said the country met the two preconditions to reinstate elected FKF leadership and a confirmation that FKF and its premises have been reverted to vice-president Doris Petra and General Secretary Barry Otieno.

"We are, therefore, pleased to confirm that the Government has fulfilled the aforementioned conditions as set out by the FIFA Council, as part of the ongoing efforts by the Government to allow Kenya’s return to international football,” FIFA said.

The world football governing body thanked Sports cabinet secretary Ababu Namwamba for the critical role he played in returning Kenyan football to normalcy.

But even then, Kenya had already missed the opportunity to participate in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
