President William Ruto has made an additional allocation of Sh2 billion to help in drought mitigation.

The government had devoted Sh3.2 billion to help the drought-stricken areas in the country.

"This morning the government of Kenya has made an additional Sh2 billion to help manage the current drought," he said on Tuesday.

The President spoke when he joined Kenya Red Cross Society as a patron at an event in the State House.

"We are working with development partners to raise another Sh10 billion to ensure no part of the country is unfairly affected by drought," he added.

He said the Kenya Red Cross will work with the government to ensure that all counties, especially the marginalized regions, get relief food.

He acknowledged that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been holding coordination meetings with various county committees to help with the exercise.

"The county coordination committees have been refocused so that the county and national governments, the UN agencies, development partners and humanitarian organizations are working together in a seamless manner," he said.

Ruto said this will ensure that there will be no duplication and it will be easy to reach all drought-stricken parts.

He expressed his confidence that the collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross and other organizations will help tackle the challenge of food insecurity and water shortage.

He lauded the Organization for crowning him patron, recognizing their role across the globe.

"I am mindful and highly appreciative of the important role played by the Kenya Red Cross, Regionally and Internationally. We are proud of the enhanced peer-to-peer support you offer other National Societies in various thematic areas," he said.

Present was Gachagua, the organization's board chair Geoffrey Koriri, and Secretary General Asha Mohamed among other senior members of Kenya Red Cross.
