Fire put off in Mt Longonot national Park - KWS

KWS said it was not an eruption but wildfire.

A Fire outbreak on the southern side of Mt. Longonot National Park reported on Thursday has been put off, Kenya Wildlife Services have said.

In a statement on Friday, KWS said an emergency response team dispatched to the area managed to contain and finally extinguish the inferno this morning.

 

"By the time the fire was put out, it had ravaged 40 hectares of bushland," KWS said.

"There was no volcanic eruption of the mountain as reported in some media platforms."

KWS assured that the park is safe to all visitors.

Mount Longonot is a stratovolcano located southeast of Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya, Africa.

It is thought to have last erupted in the 1860s.
