Cabinet secretary nominee for Defence Aden Duale has congratulated the UK Prime Minister to be, Rishi Sunak.

Duale said the new PM has had to break many barriers to become the new resident of 10 Downing Street.

"Tracing his roots to our beloved country Kenya, Sunak is among the many prominent personalities we, as a nation, can take pride in. I join other Kenyans and the world in congratulating him," he said.

In a statement on Monday, Duale pointed out that Sunak is the first person of colour, being a British Asian, and the first young PM in over two centuries.

Sunak is born to East African immigrant parents.

"At 42, he is a man of many firsts. Sunak is the first person of colour and the youngest to occupy the office in over two centuries. Coincidentally, as if a gift of Light on this Diwali Festival, he is the first Hindu too," he said.

Sunak is set to take the role of the UK's PM after his only remaining rival withdrew from the race on Monday.

Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt dropped out after failing to secure enough support among MPs.

Almost 200 MPs declared their support for the former chancellor.

Sunak will become the third PM in two months after Boris Johnson and Liz Truss.

Truss resigned 45 days after her appointment. She contested against Sunak in the last nomination.
