Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary nominee Davis Kimutai Chirchir has said the country needs to upgrade its network because it is weak.

Chirchir said that some of the power posts are rotten and need to be replaced.

"We will sit down and discuss how to upgrade our network with entities like Kenya power to adress the strengthening of the network so that we do not have to worry about power going off when it rains," he said.

He was speaking on Tuesday while appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments at County Hall, Nairobi.

Chirchir further said the solution to bringing down the cost of power lies in reducing the cost of electricity distribution.

"It is one of my first assignments to basically look at the cost structure of our parastatals. We must look at our distribution costs to be able to bring down the cost of power," he said.

He said that having served in the Energy docket before, he can say with some level of authority that he understands the sector and the challenges it faces better and is best placed to correct the shortcomings.

Chirchir was for the first time appointed Energy and Petroleum CS in 2013 by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He was suspended in 2015 after alleged involvement in corruption.
