UK announces 18 PhD and 19 masters scholarships for Kenyans

Online application was opened on September 6, 2022, and will close on October 18, 2022, at 5pm.

The Ministry of Education has urged Kenyans to take advantage of the Commonwealth scholarship opportunities offered by the UK.

Education PS Simon Nabukwesi said the ministry received communication from the British High Commission in Kenya regarding the 2023 commonwealth PhD and Masters scholarships in the United Kingdom.

“The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom is offering eighteen PhD and nineteen masters full scholarships to Kenya citizens tenable in 2023,” Nabukwesi said.

The PS said in a letter written to all vice chancellors of public and private universities as well as principals of university colleges that online application was opened on September 6, 2022, and will close on October 18, 2022, at 5pm.

“The purpose of this letter is to request you to pass the information on the attached advertisement to interested persons to apply,” Nabukwesi said.

The advertisement is found on the ministry’s website www.education.go.ke.

To qualify for master's degree scholarship, the potential candidates must provide proof that they are Kenyan citizens and possess a bachelor's degree of at least second class upper division from a recognised university with strong academic background.

The potential candidates for masters must have supporting statements from two referees, a proposal in the area of the study clearly showing the potential impact on the country’s development, a quality study plan and be below 35 years of age.

For the PhD, potential candidates must be Kenyan citizens, have a master’s degree from a recognised university, have supporting statements from two referees, one supporting statement from a supervisor in a UK institution, and a proposal in the area of study clearly showing the potential impact on country’s development.

The potential candidate must also submit a quality study plan and be below 45 years of age.

The fields of study include food security and nutrition, manufacturing, health care and housing.

The PS said all eligible candidates must complete online applications to Commonwealth Scholarships Commission in the UK.

Candidates must submit three sets of hard copies of the preliminary application form from the ministry and the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission application form with all the certified copies to the Directorate of University Education addressed to the Director of University Education.
