Kenya Kwanza Coalition is the majority party in the National Assembly, Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has ruled.

Addressing the Parliament on Thursday, Wetang'ula ruled out Azimio has majority membership in  the 13th Parliament.

"The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition political party nominated members under the names of its constituent parties," he said.

He further poked holes into the Azimio saying that some people who were in Azimio denounced the party.

He said Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party comprised 26 political parties but some parties left the coalition thereafter.

"In a letter write the member of Ugenya David Ochieng terminated its membership with Azimio," Wetang'ula said.

He said he also received letters from a few others who voted in PAA party ticket distanced themselves from Azimio coalition.

"It is indeed an established Parliamentary practice that the Speaker is not a mere conveyer belt of information. The Speaker must apply his mind to any communication document before it is presented to the house or admitted for use in the house," he said.

Wetang'ula said that the coalition agreement deposited at the registrar also had errors.

"Surprisingly, the Registrar of Political Parties this morning submitted to me documents said to be the certified copies of the coalition agreements for Kenya Kwanza and Azimio more than 6 weeks after the request by the clerk," he said.

"You will agree with me honourable members that there would be chaos in this house if I was to make rulings on the basis of unauthenticated, unverifiable and inadmissible documents that affect the rights of members."

He further claimed that there were allegations were also made by a number of members on alleged coercion and duress while entering into agreements with one of the coalitions.

"This if true is a serious affront to the democratic rights and freedoms that we enjoy as citizens of this country," he said.

According to the over one hour ruling, Kenya Kwanza now has 179 members in the National Assembly against Azimio’s 157.

“This by implication means that Kenya Kwanza is the Majority and Azimio is the Minority,” Wetangula ruled.
