Azimio la Umoja one Kenya Alliance has picked former speaker Kenneth Marende to contest for the position of the Speaker of the National Assembly.

Marende will contest for the seat against Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula.

Azimio settled on Marende during a meeting held at a Kajiado hotel on Wednesday.

The meeting was attended by president Uhuru Kenyatta, Azimio leader Raila Odinga and his deputy Martha Karua among other leaders.

The 13th parliament is set to convene for the first time on Thursday.

This is after Uhuru gazetted the first sitting of both the National Assembly and the Senate on Monday.

National Assembly has 349 members while the senate has 67 senators.

Wednesday marks the third day for the contestants to pick application forms.

Contestants have until Wednesday at 2:30 pm to submit their nomination forms.

Other leaders who have picked forms for the Speaker position include Gideon Cheruiyot,  Gilbert Kipngetich, Thangeta Fredrick, Mbii Kavindu, Peter  Nyananga, Jinaani Mbiuva, Omar Dambi, Samuel Mwangangi and Stanley Masai.
