The Senate has invited eligible Kenyans seeking the Speaker and deputy speaker posts to pick nomination papers ahead of the first sitting on Thursday, September 5.

The aspiring persons have been asked to pick nomination papers from the office of the clerk of the Senate in the main parliament building.

Nomination papers are to be picked between Monday and Wednesday.

In a statement on Monday, Clerk of the Senate Jeremiah Nyegenye said eligible candidates should take their completed nomination papers and their curriculum vitae to the office of the clerk of the senate before Wednesday 2:30 pm.

The Senate will conduct a pre-swearing session for the senators on September 7.

The pre-swearing session will be held at the parliament building from 9:00 am.

The senators will have a briefing session from 4:00 pm.

Nyegenye said that the senators are required to carry their original national Identity card or passport.

"Senators should have the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) certificate of election, four recent coloured passport size photographs, KRA pin and Curriculum Vitae," Nyegenye said.

The pre-briefing session will be followed by the swearing-in of the senators on September 8.

This is after President Uhuru Kenyatta gazetted the first sitting of both the National Assembly and the Senate.

Article 126 (2) of the Constitution requires the President to declare via a gazette notice the date for the first sitting of the new House within 30 days after elections.

The gazettement is critical to the business of the House since it's at the first sitting that MPs-elect are sworn-in and the election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker undertaken.
