COTU secretary general Francis Atwoli has congratulated President-elect William Ruto following the Supreme Court verdict that upheld his win.

Atwoli took to Twitter on Monday after the Supreme Court upheld the IEBC's declaration of Ruto as the President-elect

He said the COTU Board had earlier decided to congratulate whoever Supreme Court would declare the winner.

"During COTU (K) Executive Board meeting on 17th August, we resolved that immediately after the Supreme Court judgement, we must thank and congratulate the victor," he said.

"Consequently, we congratulate President William Ruto. We appeal to workers and Kenyans to remain peaceful," Atwoli added.

The Cotu boss is one of the many popular leaders who openly criticised Ruto's bid for the presidency.

He at one time even said the outgoing Deputy president will not be the president of Kenya.

The Supreme Court of Kenya on Monday dismissed a petition challenging Ruto's win.

The petition had been filed by Azimio leader Raila Odinga and six others.

The court unanimously upheld Ruto's win saying he garnered 50 plus one vote required for him to be declared president.

According to results announced by IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati on August 15, Ruto garnered 7.1 million votes translating to 50.49 per cent against Raila Odinga's 6.9 million votes, which is 48.8 per cent.
