Kabarnet High School from Baringo county will fly Rift Valley's flag in the national championships of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA), after dethroning defending champions St Anthony's Kitale on Sunday.
Kabarnet pulled off the tournament's biggest upset ever this season to edge out their more fancied opponents 7-6 on post-match penalties after the teams played out a barren draw in regulation time.
St Anthony's — fondly known as Solidarity Boys by their dotting fans — scraped through the semis after pipping perennial rivals Laiser Hill 4-3 on penalties.
On the other hand, Karbanet saw off Kaimoi on penalties following a one-all draw in regulation time.
In the girls' duel, Wiyeta Girls were crowned Rift Valley football champions after mauling Itigo 5-1 to secure a berth in the national championships.
The high-flying Wiyeta made their intentions clear right from the semis, where they thrashed Kaptubos 16-0. Itigo romped into the finals following an emphatic 6-0 win over Moi Girls, Eldoret.
Both Kabarnet and Wiyeta will now represent Rift Valley in the national championships slated for September 8-11 in Nakuru county.
