Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has said Kenyans have to make sacrifices for devolution to work.

He said the 45 governors sworn in on Thursday should protect the resources entrusted to them.

“If devolution is going to work, we must make sacrifices. I’m happy because the anti-corruption agency has made you people swear today that you will operate in a manner that will preserve every taxpayer’s shilling to serve the welfare of our people, not to enrich a few,” Kalonzo said.

He spoke during Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti and her deputy Francis Mwangangi swearing-in at Kenyatta Stadium.

“I know our friends from Nigeria may bear me witness. Before devolution took root in Nigeria, several outgoing governors, more than 20 of them, had to go to jail. This is the time to demonstrate that this stops,” Kalonzo said.

“We want to see Konza City become a city. We must make Thwake Dam supply water to Konza City and Machakos town.”

He urged Ndeti to provide relief food to residents hard-hit by the drought.

“Our people are hungry, there is a special programme in Machakos government. Give them food before the rains come. Don’t be a governor who sits in office. Go and meet people across the county," Kalonzo told Ndeti.

The function was attended by, among other national government officials, politicians and civil servants from Machakos government.

County commissioner Rhoda Onyancha, county police commander Issa Mahammud, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council CEO Daniel Yumbya attended.

Also in attendance were MPs Patrick Makau (Mavoko), Robert Mbui (Kathiani), Stephen Mule (Matungulu), Robert Basil (Yatta), Joshua Kimilu (Kaiti), Thaddeus Nzambia (Kilome), Jesca Mbalu (Kibwezi East), Charles Nguna (Mwingi West), Woman representatives Irene Kasalu (Kitui) and Machakos senator Agnes Kavindu.
