Police in Kisumu have launched investigations to unearth the cause of fire at Kisumu Boys High school.

Kisumu Central deputy County Commissioner Hussein Alanson said the incident was unfortunate being that schools were just opened on Friday.

"We cannot say at the moment what is the cause of the fire. Investigation are on and at a later date will give response as to what might have caused the fire," he said.

He noted that assessment of damages is ongoing and further assessment agencies will be involved to get the extent of the damage.

A number of dormitories and classrooms were affected in the morning incident.

According to Chief Principal Dancun Owiye, the fire started around 8.30 am when the boys had already taken their breakfast and gone to their various classes.

He said the fire began from one of the dormitories and when it was noticed the fire bridge was called in to help put it out.

One of the dormitories is attached to the classrooms but no casualty was reported.

"We have a total of 1,500 students and non has been hurt by the fire incident. They are all safe," Owiye said.

Kisumu Central MP-lect Joshua Oron who was at the scene said they will work with the school management and other stakeholders to ensure things go back to normal.

Oron also thanked the local community for responded swiftly before the fire engines could arrive.

"We also want to thank the county government and airports authority for their fire engines including the security teams who responded to this".

The city manager Abala Wanga who spoke to the Star noted that the fire was huge and needed combined efforts.

"I want to apologise of the delay in our fire engine because the magnitude of the fire was huge and the water went down so they had to rush back to the hydrant. But the airport Authority fire engine came in handy after they were called," he said.
