Chaos and delay have rocked the Starehe constituency tallying centre over the announcement of the parliamentary seat results.

On Thursday night, a senior official from IEBC had to step in an attempt to resolve the stalemate.

He asked the constituents who were at the Jamhuri High School to give the Returning officer Milliam Wanjiru more time in order to announce the results.

However, the impatient crowd refused to leave. The same request had been made by the RO at midnight, promising that the results will be announced at 6 am.

People, however, refused to leave that hall as requested.

Journalists were also caught up in the mix making it hard for them to leave the venue. They were forced to camp overnight.

Earlier, ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna said both marked and unmarked ballot papers were recovered from suspects in Starehe Constituency.

He said the ballots were taken to Central Police Station, Nairobi, and the case is being handled.

The race to succeed Starehe Mp Charles Njagua attracted two main competitors, Jubilee Party’s Amos Mwago and EALA MP Simon Mbugua from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party, with each aiming to get a majority of votes from the 169,575 registered voters in the sub-county.

On Thursday morning, County returning officer said the tallying was ongoing.

“So far, we have the status of three elective positions. For presidential results, they have received 255 out of 259 polling stations. Others are yet to be processed,” she said.

For the MP position, the RO has processed 254 polling stations with four stations remaining.

For the MCA, Starehe has six wards with only one (Landi Mawe) yet to be processed.

"With directions from county RO. I have processed 254 out of 259 polling stations," Wanjiru added.
