A Presiding Officer and his deputy were on Wednesday arrested in Kisauni, for refusing to count votes.

According to the police, Nicholas Nyamuya Motatiro, 34, and Sawia Mutes Kirunda allegedly refused to count votes at station 3 in Utange polling station.

The two were reported by Kisauni Constituency Returning officer Ibrahim Wario. They were arrested at 3 am and taken to Bamburi Police Station.

Police said they will be charged in court.

“They will be charged with willfully rejecting or refusing to count any ballot paper, which they knew or had reasonable cause to believe such person was entitled to vote,” reads a police report.

They will be charged under the Elections Act of 2016.

Tallying of ballot papers at Shanzu Teacher Training college, which is Kisauni constituency tallying centre is still ongoing at a slow pace.

As of 11 am on Wednesday, ballot boxes from various polling stations were being received at the centre.
