Three bodyguards of Kisii politician killed in grisly accident

Party officials said the driver was trying to avoid hitting a bodaboda rider when the car lost control.

At least three people from Kisii governor candidate Manson Oyongo's security detail were killed on Tuesday evening as they sped towards a funeral in Magenche, Bomachoge Borabu.

Two others are fighting for their lives in hospital after the Probox car they were riding in lost control and rolled several times at Riobonyo area near Nyangusu.

Kisii sub-county traffic commander Daniel Ochieng said the driver of the Probox was speeding when the accident happened.

“He knocked a pedestrian and a motorcycle. Five people were injured and one person died on the spot,” he said.

He said police have received information that two of the injured people died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

He said the remaining two people are currently receiving treatment and that they were not in a critical condition.

He said police have launched a manhunt for the driver who escaped from the scene after the accident.

Job Nyangenya, an MP candidate for Bomachoge Borabu, said Oyongo was in the convoy but his car was already ahead when the accident occurred.

"They were in the same convoy with Governor (Oyongo) but his car was metres ahead," said Nyangenya.

Mr Oyongo has not answered calls and texts sent to him.

Party Secretary General Ben Gisore sent condolences on behalf the party.

He promised they would foot the bills of the victims.

"They will pay mortuary and hospital bills for the victims," he added.

Nyangenya said the KNC party boss had gone to console former Nyaribari Masaba MP Elijah Moindi who had lost his mother and was en route to another funeral in Magenche where the area Ward Rep is bereaved.
