Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga has pledged to redesign the Nithi Bridge in Tharaka Nithi.

This comes after a Modern Coast bus plunged into river Nithi, an accident that claimed the lives of 35 people.

Speaking during a campaign trail in Meru county, Raila said once he clinches power, the bridge will be a priority in his early days in office.

While condoling with the families of the deceased, he said not only will he rebuild the bridge, but will also have it upgraded to modern standards.

"I send my condolence to all the families who lost their loved ones in that accident. I will look into the matters of that bridge once I enter the office, It has killed many people and we will have to rebuild another one, more modern to make sure we do not lose any other soul," he said.

The accident occurred on Sunday.

The bus belonging to the Modern Coast services lost control plunging into the river along the Meru - Mombasa highway.

Eyewitnesses said that the Mombasa-bound bus was from Meru Town when the accident occurred slightly past 6 pm.

Following the accident, the National Transport and Safety Authority halted the operations of Modern Coast Express Limited.

"A thorough multi-agency investigation into the crash and an evaluation of the operator's safety operational standards is currently underway," NTSA Director General George Njao said in a statement Monday.

A month ago, NTSA released a report on the increasing number of deaths following road accidents.

The authority said about 2,211 have died on Kenyan roads between January and June this year, compared to 1,988 who died around the same time in 2021.
