Ruto, Raila celebrate Kipyegon for winning Kenya's first gold in World Championships

Deputy President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Tuesday led Kenyans in celebrating 1500m World Athletics Champion Faith Kipyegon.

The two leaders are among a host of Kenyans who have commended Kipyegon for winning Kenya its first Gold medal in the championships.

According to Ruto, the former World champion had put on an incredible performance to reclaim her title.

He also congratulated Judith Korir, Stanley Mburu and Conseslus Kipruto who had earlier on won Silver and Bronze.

"Incredible performance! Congratulations Faith Kipyegon for winning Gold and regaining your world 1500M title. Well in Judith Korir and Stanley Mburu for clinching Silver on your respective races and Conseslus Kipruto’s Bronze," he said in a tweet.

Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga also congratulated Kipyegon, urging her to keep on inspiring the youthful generation.

"Well done, what a powerful finish by Faith Kipyegon to take the 1500 M Gold medal. Congratulations! Keep running and keep inspiring our youth."

Kipyegon clocked 3:52.96 to retain the title she won in Doha in 2019 as Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay took silver in 3:54.52. Great Britain’s Laura Muir settled for the bronze in 3:55.26.

Kipyegon’s mark is the 10th fastest time ever and is the 2nd fastest time run in the United States, after her time of 3:52.59 at the 2022 Prefontaine Meet.

So far, Kenya has a total of six medals including; One Gold, three Silver and two Bronze.
