The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has cautioned governors against malpractices ahead of the August polls.

EACC boss Twalib Mbarak on Monday said the commission has received intelligence that some county governments were trying to employ more people before leaving office because they want to leave good legacies.

“Some people are trying to approve suspected pending bills while others are trying to prioritise bedroom cooked projects,” he stated.

Despite the formation of new county governments after elections, Mbarak stated that any public officer who will engage in malpractices will be arrested and charged.

“Whoever does this as a public official should know we are just undergoing a political transition but the accountability as a government officer will remain,” Mbarak noted.

The anti-graft agency said that it has intensified vigilance during this transition period and has so far disrupted corruption transactions and schemes aimed at looting public funds, especially in governments.

The commission has commenced investigations into an allegation of embezzlement of over Sh1.1 billion public funds in the County Government of Kilifi, through fraudulent payment of legal fees to law firms.

It is reported that some law firms colluded with the County Government to receive illegal payments in respect to matters filed in Court.
