An anti-corruption court has acquitted former Finance minister Chris Obure over the Sh1.3 billion Anglo-Leasing graft scandal.

Obure served as Transport Chief Administrative Secretary and is the Jubilee governor seat aspirant in Kisii county.

Magistrate Ann Mwangi also acquitted former Transport PS Sammy Kyungu and former Finance Secretary Samwel Bundotich saying the prosecution failed to prove all the charges against the accused persons.

Their co-accused, former Post-master General Francis Chahonyo, died in June 2020.

The magistrate said each of the accused persons demonstrated that they acted in good faith and not arbitrarily to confer a benefit to themselves in the project.

They had been charged with abuse of office over a contract signed between the government and three US companies to supply internet services in 2003.

Obure, Kyungu and Bundotich were on September 24, 2021 found to have a case to answer.

The prosecution had alleged that the late Chahonyo and Kyungu were the initiators of the scam, Obure authorised the payments while Bundotich made the payments.
