Humanity risks going extinct if the impacts of climate change are not addressed, a lobby has warned.

The warning by We Don’t Have Time comes ahead of the commemoration of World Earth Day on Friday.

The organisation's Africa region representative Patrick Kiarie said, "Humanity is on the verge of extinction due to the current climate crisis. If we don’t act now, the adverse effects of global warming will catch up with us."

He said inadequate rainfall, a rise in sea levels, intolerable high temperatures and flooding will be experienced.

Kiarie warned that human beings must either change or perish.

He said during the commemoration of Earth Day, governments, businesses, and companies will be challenged to invest in nature-based solutions rather than subsidising fossil fuels that are destructive to the planet.

"Nature-based solutions are a great remedy to the effects of climate change," he said.

He said We Don’t Have Time, the largest climate review platform globally, has been at the forefront of championing climate action through awareness.

It sensitises organisations that engage in activities that pollute the environment to use sustainable approaches in their operations that positively impact the planet.

It also gives alternative ways that organisations and individuals should embrace to enhance a sustainable environment.

Kiarie said they have planted a lot of trees in and outside the country.

We Don’t Have Time has partnered with Trees for the Future, which plants trees for every member who joins the platform. The organisation has planted more than 700,000 trees for members who have joined We Don’t Have Time platform.

Kiarie said Kenya is on track towards increasing her forest cover.

"We are on the right track, but we need to up our game in bridging the information gap on climate matters, especially for the young generation," he said.

"Through awareness, organisations and companies have adopted sustainability policies in their operations that have gone a long way in reducing emissions to the atmosphere," he said.
