University lecturer Erick Mutai is on the verge of winning the UDA nominations in Kericho against former energy CS Charles Keter.

The winner will fly the UDA flag in the race for the Kericho governor seat on August 9.

As of Friday morning, the university don was leading in the race for the UDA governor ticket with 17049 votes. He was closely followed by Keter Charles who had garnered 12,136 votes as vote counting continued in some polling stations.

He took to Twitter to thank the residents for the support. "You are a wonderful family. We really thank God. Thanks a lot for your support guys."

On Tuesday, Engineer Fred Kirui, who was eyeing the UDA ticket, gave up his ambitions and instead accepted to be Dr Mutai's running mate.

In a signed agreement, Mutai and Kirui will run for the county top seat as governor and running mate, respectively.

The immediate former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Keter had expressed confidence that he would win the ticket.

He cast his vote at Kapmasoo Primary school in the Belgut sub-county during the UDA nomination exercise.

He challenged both those who will win and lose the nominations to maintain peace.

Other UDA governor aspirants include James Sang and Kericho Deputy Governor Lily Ngok.

Engineers Samuel Rotich and Elijah Maru who are running as independent candidates will face the UDA nominee during the August 9 polls.
