Six people have been injured in an accident along Nairobi – Namanga road in Athi River, Machakos County.
Athi River sub-county police commander Anderson Njagi said the victims sustained the injuries after two vehicles they were travelling got involved in an accident a few metres from the Savannah Cement Limited. The accident occurred on Saturday dawn, around 1.00 am.
Njagi said the accident involved a private car and a 14–sitter matatu which were moving in different directions.
“It was a slight accident that injured six people including the woman who was driving the private car. There was no casualty during the incident,” Njagi told the Star on phone on Saturday.
He said the private car was moving from Nairobi's general direction towards Kitengela in Kajiado County while the passenger matatu was headed in the opposite direction when the accident occurred.
The two vehicles collided head-on leading to the injuries.
Njagi said the accident occurred after the car’s driver failed to keep her lane.
Athi River Township assistant chief Martin Ngomo said he witnessed the incident.
“While on security patrol, I witnessed the accident at Namanga road just opposite Savannah Cement Limited involving a 14–sitter matatu and the private car,” Ngomo said.
Ngomo said he alerted officers from Athi River police station who swiftly responded and cleared the scene by rescuing the victims and removing the wreckages.
Njagi said all the six victims were rushed to Kitengela Level 4 Hospital for treatment.
They included drivers of both vehicles and passengers.
The car is said to have had two occupants, the female driver and a passenger while the matatu had four occupants including its driver.
He said the wreckages were towed to Athi River police station pending inspection.
Njagi said police had launched investigations into the accident.
He cautioned motorists against flouting traffic rules and regulations thereby causing unnecessary accidents on the roads hence endangering the lives of innocent Kenyans.
The incident happened barely a week after a nineteen–year–old woman died following a tragic road accident along Nairobi – Kangundo road at Malaa in Matungulu, Machakos County.
Esther Kavinya succumbed while undergoing treatment at Kangundo Level 4 Hospital.
