Interior CS Fred Matiang’i on Thursday held a meeting with the leaders from Garissa County to seek a lasting solution to the conflict in some parts of the country.

The attacks have been linked to land control, and access to resources.

During the meeting that was held in Nairobi, the meeting tasked NCIC and the leaders with reconciliation and peace efforts to foster cohesion.

The meeting comes a day after the CS announced a dusk to dawn curfew in some parts of Garissa County effective Wednesday, March 23.

He said that the step has been reached following attacks that have been fuelled by conflicts over land and other resources.

“This has triggered retaliatory attacks and the loss of life, destruction of property, and created tensions in the affected areas,” Matiang’i said.

The curfew is being observed from 6 pm to 6 am.

Matiang’i said 23 suspects are in police custody in relation to the conflicts and will be arraigned after the investigations.

The areas affected in Garissa central include Waberi East location (Bulla Othan and Bulla Mzuri), Waberi West location (Bulla Tawakal), and in Iftin location, Bulla Rakham will be affected.

At the same time, the CS has suspended all land surveys, adjudications, issuance of title deeds, and transactions in the disturbed areas until further notice.
