Body of missing KWS officer retrieved from Yala River

The puzzle surrounding more than 20 bodies found dumped in River Yala, Siaya County continued to be solved when another missing person was identified.

The body of missing Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officer Francis Oyaro was found at the river and identified increasing to 12 the number so far identified.

His body was among those retrieved from the river.

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo called on the relevant authorities to unmask Oyaro’s killers and bring justice to the family.

Oyaro who went missing in August 2021 in Uyoma, Siaya County was among the 26 people whose bodies were dumped in River Yala by unknown people.

DNA results on Thursday confirmed Oyaro’s body, after matching samples collected from his mother, the family said.

Oyaro’s family previously visited the Yala Sub-County morgue to identify their kin but were unable because at the time bodies had decomposed beyond recognition.

Oyaro had been missing since August 28 when he was travelling from Marsabit to Nairobi aboard a KWS vehicle and later to his rural home.

According to his wife, Veronica Osore, he was last seen on August 28, 2021.

He was on his way home from Marsabit National Park, where he worked.

Veronica recounted that on a fateful day, her spouse called at around 1 pm informing her that he was approaching Nanyuki.

At around 8pm, calls made to Oyaro were not going through, she said.

Oyaro had been fingered over alleged poaching.

Gem Deputy Commissioner Mosero Chacha confirmed that out of the 26 bodies retrieved from River Yala, 11 had been positively identified and collected by families ready for burial.

The process of identifying the others is ongoing. Most of those whose bodies are being found have a criminal record.

Inspector-General of Police Hilary Mutyambai said investigations into the cases are ongoing and experts from the DCI headquarters are handling the matter.

Police headquarters has asked all police commanders to compile a list of all missing persons whose cases have pend under investigation in the past five years.

HAKI Africa wrote to DPP Noordin Haji requesting his intervention over the issue in Yala after it emerged some of the victims had been tortured and possibly murdered elsewhere before their bodies were dumped in the river which empties into Lake Victoria.
