North Eastern counties are still recording low booster vaccine uptake, two months after the government started administering the extra jabs in January.

Data released by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday listed Lamu County as the worst performing county in booster uptake with just 50 doses administered since January 4, 2022.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said in a statement that other counties doing poorly in booster vaccine uptake are  Marsabit with 74 jabs and Wajir with 101 doses.

Despite government efforts to boost the uptake, Lamu County and several North Eastern counties like Wajir and Marsabit still continue to register low vaccine uptake.

The booster dose is the third dose for those who are vaccinated with either AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna or Sinopharm or a second dose for those vaccinated with Johnson and Johnson.

During a meeting on Tuesday by World Health Organization experts, they have strongly supported the urgent and broad access to the booster doses to avoid future infections.

“Ideally, COVID 19 vaccines will prevent infection and transmission, in addition to providing protection against severe diseases and death,” a WHO report stated.

WHO further said that vaccination including the booster is meant to majorly help people at risk of contracting severe diseases.

Numerous studies carried out have since proven that booster doses help restore failing immunity and protect against severe cases of Covid-19.

According to the Ministry of Health report, Kenya aims to administer 4.2 million booster shots by June 2022 to all eligible adults.

In the last 24 hours, the number of booster doses administered is 774.
