Two KCPE pregnant candidates on Monday sat their exams in hospitals in Kwale.

The two are from Msambweni constituency. One had her exam in Msambweni Referral Hospital and the other in Kinondo Health Centre.

Msambweni subcounty education director Abraham Nyamawai said the two are the only cases of teen pregnancy reported in the area on day one of the examinations.

He, however, could not tell whether the girls were yet to deliver or had other illnesses and needed medical supervision.

On Monday morning, county education director Martin Cheruiyot said the county had only two candidates from Kinango and Matuga who were scheduled to have their exams in hospitals.

Last year, more than 29 candidates gave birth during the national exams in the region.

Kwale has 23,375 KCPE candidates sitting for the 2021 national exam,  11,758 are boys while 11,617 are girls.

In Msambweni, 4,243 are sitting the KCPE exam.

Nyamawi said the exams started smoothly without leakages or any indiscipline cases.

“We are very grateful to have a smooth start, each centre manager and supervisors arrived on time,” he said.

Msambweni subcounty had 67 examination centres after some were merged. They were initially 87.

Kwale had 464 examination centres whereby each was manned by two police officers.

The exam containers were opened at 6am.

In Matuga, county commissioner Gideon Oyagi and county police commander Amrose Steve Oloo led the exercise.

The rest of the remaining four subcounties were done by the deputy county commissioners.

Oyagi warned the exam centre managers and invigilators against carelessness that might compromise the exams' security.

“Let's be careful not to destroy our reputation,” he said.

Oloo cautioned officers against abandoning their posts and engaging in weapons training with the candidates.

“Avoid being the training instructors in schools where you want to give lectures to students as far as the mechanism of your rifle is concerned,” he said.
