If nothing is done in the next seven days, Keroche breweries will be forced to drain down all the beer, Chief Executive Officer Tabitha Karanja has cried foul.

In a series of tweets on Friday, Karanja explained how the firm has been struggling over Covid-19 effects.

"Who will come to our aid? Who will listen? Over 250 permanent and pensionable jobs are at risk," she said.

"Those who can unlock this issue are not available. The ripple effect of these jobs being terminated, does anyone care? Where is our leadership."

Karanja said this has drained all their resources and that they may lay down over 250 direct employees and thousands within their nationwide distribution network.

"My question to you all is, if there is an issue, do you kill the hen that lays the eggs or you find out why the hen isn’t laying more eggs and you fix that situation?" she posed.

"I have battled with this issue for a very long time. I believe in resolving issues that help everyone grow. Those that can fix this are not available. Please help me pass the message."

Kenya Revenue Authority shut down the company over a Sh332 million tax arrears.

The shut-down comes even after the Naivasha-based brewer had asked the taxman for a grace period to clear the tax obligation, saying the Covid-19 pandemic had adversely affected its revenue flows.

She said Sh332 million tax arrears, which are the genesis of the current crisis, had accrued from February 2021 which saw the firm reach a deal with KRA on how to resettle it.
