Former Mt Elgon MP John Serut has passed away.

Serut died at a Nairobi hospital after a long battle with cancer.

His death was confirmed by the daughter, Michelle Serut on Wednesday.

He represented Mt Elgon for two terms; from 2002 to 2007 before he lost to Fred Kapondi in the subsequent election.

In 2013, Serut was elected for another term as an independent candidate.

In October last year, the former MP's family appealed for financial help from Kenyans.

According to the daughter, Serut had bee diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January of 2020, and it had taken a financial toll on the family.

"Hey guys, so a lot of you don’t know me but I’m here requesting your help today. My father’s name is John Serut and he’s been unwell for a while now. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January of 2020. Since then, we’ve had medical bills totaling to about 20 million," Michelle said.

In his message of condolence, Deputy President William Ruto remembered Serut as a gifted debater, persistent and a fighter for equal justice.

"Mheshimiwa John Serut was a firm, bold and vocal politician who served the people of Mt Elgon with distinction.  We honour the rich legacy that he leaves behind," Ruto said.
