UDA has no coalition agreement with ANC, Ford-K — Muthama

Deputy President William Ruto's UDA has clarified it has no coalition agreement with Musalia Mudavadi's ANC and Moses Wetangula's Ford Kenya dismissing reports of a power-sharing deal.

UDA National Chairman Johnson Muthama on Monday said there is no signed agreement between the political parties and that they are currently operating on the basis of friendship.

Addressing a press conference at his Red Office in Gigiri on Monday, the former Machakos senator told supporters to disregard media reports of a deal in the nascent Kenya Kwanza coalition.

"As we are speaking now, you are being assured by none other than UDA chairman, there is no coalition agreement that has been arrived between the three coalition parties," Muthama said.

"We are friends who continue talking and engaging but when the time comes for then that issue will be dealt with at that time."

Muthama was responding to reports that a deal had been inked to zone some counties and allow only ANC and Ford Kenya to field candidates in those areas.

UDA on Sunday called on the public to ignore reports detailing how the party plans to share positions of power if it forms the next government in August.

In a statement, UDA Secretary-General Veronica Maina said the reports should be treated as mere speculation by the media.

She insisted that the cooperation between UDA, ANC and Ford Kenya is only aimed at bringing Kenyans together, driving the country towards economic prosperity and not intended at sharing any positions of power.
