The Atheists in Kenya society have weighed on the controversial debate on the regulation of churches in the country.

In a statement by its President Harrison Mumia, the society on Monday said they are supporting Ida Odinga's Sunday remarks that called for regulation of churches.

ODM leader Raila Odinga's wife statement attracted a huge debate on social media forcing her to apologize to a section of Kenyans who deemed her remarks as ill-intended.

But Atheists in Kenya society now says Ida was right.

"Ida Odinga should not apologize for stating the obvious. The government should shut down churches that fall short of the legal threshold to operate," Mumia said in the statement.

The society stated that the country needs legislation that will monitor the operation and sprouting of churches in order "to bring about transparency and accountability of religious leaders".

"The Church in Kenya has become commercialized. Some churches sell prosperity while some take advantage of their congregants' ignorance," Mumia stated.

He added: "There is a need to enact specific legislation to govern the religious sector to bring about transparency and accountability by religious leaders".

Mumia further asked the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) to close down all churches that are not run by trained theologians.
