Police are investigating an incident in which a police officer who was on interdiction was found dead in Meru County.

The officer had in August 2020 shot his girlfriend six times following a disagreement outside Laare Police Station in Meru County, prompting his interdiction.

The body of constable David Nyamweya, who was attached to Mutuati Police Station in Igembe North, was found floating in River Kathita, near Meru town on Saturday afternoon.

Police said his identity was revealed after crime scene investigators found an interdiction letter dated January 2, 2022, inside his pocket.

Police are, however, investigating to establish if it was suicide or if he was killed and his body dumped in the river.

According to police, the officer was to attend a police disciplinary hearing in March for misuse of a firearm following the shocking attack on Everlyne Njoki, who luckily survived the shooting incident on August 22, 2020.

The motive for the death of the officer is yet to be known. Police suspect work-related trauma as the cause of the death and earlier attack on the woman.

Measures to address the trend that has seen dozens of officers die in such cases are being put in place. They include the creation of a counselling unit within the National Police Service Commission to roll out various programmes on the issue.

The body of the officer was moved to the mortuary.

Elsewhere, police are investigating an incident in which two students at Michuki Technical, Muranga, drowned in River Mathioya in Gatanga area following a freak accident.

Reports say the two had gone for a photo shot near the falls when the girl slipped and fell inside the ranging waters.

The young man jumped in the water to try and save the girl, but the strong current swept them away. Police said they will grill witnesses over the incident.

Such incidents are common in the area amid calls for action to tame the trend. Locals want authorities to erect warning signs to caution such victims, mostly visitors.

The bodies were taken to the mortuary.
