The ODM party has apologised to Maragua MP Mary Wamaua after she was manhandled during party leader Raila Odinga's Azimio La Umoja convention at Kasarani Stadium.

Wamaua was Friday seen arguing with the security team at one of the Stadium's entrances as she bitterly complained of being roughed up as she tried to access the facility.

In a statement signed by ODM Chairman John Mbadi on Saturday, the party said it regretted the 'ugly incident' and assured that such incidents would not happen again.

"On behalf of the ODM Party, I take this opportunity to publicly apologise to Hon Wamaua for the indecent handling and pray that she, together with the good people of Maragua will accept our apology," Mbadi said.

The party said Raila is a strong defender of women's rights and their empowerment and it shall do everything within its limits to protect, defend and uphold the dignity of women at all times.

Raila on Friday displayed his political might as he launched a mega movement to face his opponents in the 2022 presidential race.

After putting his supporters in suspense for months, the former prime minister finally declared his bid for president at a colourful, fully packed event in Nairobi.

Raila said Azimio La Umoja will now be turned into a coalition, making National unity a central pillar in his 2022 campaign.

In a clear departure from his past radical politics, Raila said he is not running for president to oppose anyone but to propose better policies.
