Controversial Pastor James Ng'ang'a of the Neno Evangelism Ministry has responded to the Media Council of Kenya statement to the television station affiliated to him over the breach of code of conduct.

MCK CEO David Omwoyo Thursday said that the council is still following due process in probing the allegations against Sasa TV for breach of the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya.

Omwoyo said that the station provided a platform and allowed the airing of offensive content on October 9, 2021.

The Council notes that the media house in question breached clauses 5 (b) (c) on Accountability and 10 (1) on Obscenity, Taste, and Tone in Reporting by allowing a presenter, Apostle James Maina Ng’ang’a in a live broadcast from ‘Jerusalem City Kenya’ at 1024 hours where he uttered offensive and unprintable words on-air,” Omwoyo said.

The TV station has also been directed to show cause why action should not be taken against it, further to which the Council will institute relevant sanctions in line with our mandate.

But in a video clip seen by the Star, Ng'ang'a, who is currently in the US, dismissed the letter from MCK, saying that the media is only answerable to the Communications Authority.

“As far as I know, I am not under Media Council of Kenya but under CA. We report to the CA and I receive the letter from them giving me a warning,” Ng'ang'a said.

The pastor said that the council should find a better way to address him, and that is the only way where he will be able to dispatch his lawyer to answer the council’s question.

“I am a preacher, not under anybody…to preach what or what depends on the message that I have.”

He has also challenged the council to table the exact words that he is being alleged to have uttered and translate them to Kiswahili before taking any action.

“Let us not fight over TV stations. Sell what you want to sell. I am a preacher. So, if somebody is there trying to intimidate me, it's too late. Let me talk to my viewers, protect the altar of God,” Ng'ang'a said.

Further, the council had said that it noted the possible breach of the programming code for free-to-air radio and television services in Kenya and has notified the CA accordingly for investigation.

“We caution media houses, editors, journalists, and media practitioners against airing offensive content as stringent penalties will be administered in line with the Media Council Act, 2013.”
