The Orange party has extended its free membership registration by another three months.

In a statement on Wednesday, ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna said the party’s Central Committee chaired by party leader Raila Odinga had resolved to extend the free registration period.

“Given the success we have witnessed and the desire from the public to join the party in the last three months, we resolved to extend the free membership registration for ordinary members that was expected to expire the 30th of September to the 31st of December 2021,” he said.

On June 30, the Orange party waived party membership registration fees for three months.

Sifuna in a statement said this came about after many people asked the party to waive the Sh100 required for ordinary membership registration due to the economic situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The Party Leader HE. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga has directed my office to waive the membership fee for anyone wishing to join our party in the next three months beginning 1st July, 2021," Sifuna said in a letter to all County Chairpersons.

The central committee met on Wednesday and also called on the IEBC to deploy sufficient human and material resources in its strongholds during the voter registration exercise.

“Out of the seven million targeted new voters, we have noticed that more than half of the number is in our party’s traditional strongholds of Nyanza, Western, Coast and Nairobi. We implore on the IEBC to deploy commensurate resources in those regions,” Sifuna said.

The party urged leaders at the grassroots and all members elected and nominated on the party ticket to retreat to their respective areas to coordinate and mobilise for voter registration.
