The Nakuru county government has honoured late President Daniel Moi's long-serving press secretary Lee Njiru by naming a road after him.

The road was unveiled on Tuesday, as part of the county government drive to rename 179 roads.

Lee Njiru served as a civil servant for 46 years.

Njiru started his work in 1977 under the presidency of founding father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and after he died, Moi retained him.

The late Daniel Moi and Lee Njiru have a long-standing relationship as he termed Moi as a father figure.

Njiru is now a businessman and also runs an exotic resort in Nakuru after retiring from the civil service.

Presiding over the unveiling, Nakuru Deputy Governor Eric Korir said the county was proud to honour Njiru through his impressive tenure in the civil service.

“Throughout his career in the presidency, Njiru employed an impressive work ethic and integrity, which is a lesson to the young people who are starting their careers,” Korir said.

Njiru expressed gratitude to Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui for the honorary gesture.

“I want to thank the Nakuru county leadership for this great honour and recognition of my long service to the presidency,” Njiru said.

Nakuru has made an effort to name roads after local heroes and heroines.

Governor Lee Kinyanjui has constituted a task force that will oversee the renaming of roads.

In May, Nairobi county named Dik Dik road after Cotu secretary general Francis Atwoli.

“I want to thank the Nairobi county leadership, under Anne Kananu for this great honour and recognition of services to the government, community and workers at large,” Atwoli said.

“We will continue offering our unwavering support to the leadership of the county.”

There is also a motion in the county assembly in a bid to rename Mbagathi Way to Raila Odinga road in honour of the former Prime Minister.
