President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday met ODM party leader Raila Odinga and OKA co-principals Gideon Moi (Kanu), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Musalia Mudavadi (ANC) and Moses Wetang'ula (Ford-K) at State House, Mombasa.

"Uhuru held a consultative meeting with a cross-section of political party leaders to discuss several subjects touching on the State of the Kenyan Nation," State House spokesperson Kanze Dena said in a statement.

Also present was Kakamega Governor and ODM deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya.

Among the subjects discussed by the leaders were, Covid-19's impact on the country and how to revamp the economy;.

They also discussed the importance of maintaining peace, unity and national cohesion.

The meeting comes barely days after Mudavadi, Wetangula and Kalonzo exited the National Super Alliance, citing bullying and betrayal by ODM.

The President has been working to re-unite the leaders ahead of 2022.

Last month, Uhuru declared that he will pick his 2022 successor from among the Nasa principals if they unite and agree on a single candidate.

For the first time, Uhuru challenged the Nasa principals to unite to enhance their chances of forming the next government after he retires next year.

The declaration knocks off Ruto from Uhuru's succession matrix. It was in fact the unequivocal sign Uhuru will campaign against the second in command.

This was the first time Uhuru was openly revealing how he will pick his successor even as bigwigs jostle to position themselves to take the reins from him.

The meeting in Mombasa also comes at the backdrop of allegations from the deputy president William Ruto's allies that the handshake distabilised the economy.

They accused Nasa and a section of Jubilee legislators of 'taking the government hostage' through the BBI for the past four years.

In a statement read last Thursday after the 'Hustlers' Parliamentary Group meeting in Karen, the MPs said as a result, they sabotaged and scuttled the Big Four Agenda plan of job creation, universal health coverage, food security and manufacturing.

"Regrettably, the Nasa coalition, its principals and their Jubilee collaborators took the government hostage and hijacked its agenda," Kandara MP Alice Wahome who read part of the statement said.

"They mismanaged the economy leading to stockpiling of public debt to unprecedented levels occasioning the current crisis."

The MPs said they had consistently and repeatedly raised concerns and objections to Jubilee’s abandoning of its agenda upon which it was re-elected in 2017.
