Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has said that he steered the ODM party to great success in the nine years he served as its Kilifi county chairman.

In a statement on Tuesday, Kingi said the success can be measured by the 2017 election where all elected leaders came from the Orange party.

"As I respect the decision of the ODM party to replace me as the Kilifi County ODM Party Chairman, I wish to take this opportunity to thank the Party and more particularly, the party leader the Rt Hon. Raila Odinga for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Kilifi County ODM Chairman for the past nine years," he said.

The governor wished the incoming Kilifi County ODM chairman and the party the best as it prepares for the 2022 General Election.

"I hope and pray that the incoming Chair and his team will match and/or break this sterling record," Kingi added.

Kingi is replaced by Ganze MP, Teddy Mwambire.

Kingi was accused of being disloyal to the Raila Odinga-led Orange party.

The Kilifi Governor has been rooting for a coastal region political party and unity ahead of 2022.

"Unity is coming but other people should not wait for the party to be brought by Kingi," he said.

"Instead of looking for a political party, we should focus on consolidating our base. When the coast has one vehicle it will set a strong base."

The push has seen him clash with ODM party leader Raila Odinga and deputy party leader and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho who is also a close friend of Kingi.

In February, Kingi faulted Joho for insisting on staying with ODM.
