Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo has asked University of Nairobi vice chancellor Stephen Kiama to stop taking a collision path with Education CS George Magoha.

The MP said a clash between the university and its parent ministry will hurt the progress of the institution and higher education in general.

Kiama and Magoha have been caught up in an administrative impasse.

This is after the university announced a raft of changes, including the scrapping of the five positions of deputy vice-chancellors (DVCs).

The CS however suspended the proposals saying the changes must follow the law.

The CS asked the university to write a justification on the proposed changes, rationale behind the decisions, organisation structure, staff establishment, human resource policies, and guidelines.

Magoha said the university should also prove the availability of the budget to cater for the proposed restructuring and recruitment.

The CS's statement saw Kiama issue a fresh statement saying some of the reforms will proceed as the institution had already adhered to the law.

The court has already suspended the implementation of the reforms pending hearing and determination of a case filed by the Universities Academic Staff Union.

Speaking in Gem, the MP complained that Magoha and Kiama have on numerous occasions issued conflicting statements on managerial changes at the institution that confuses its top organs.

He said heads of public universities should work closely with the parent ministry  to develop higher education in the country.
