A city businessman accused of shooting two police officers and a woman at Quivers Lounge in Kasarani will remain in custody until August 5.

Milimani magistrate Esther Kimilu said Dickson Njanja will remain at Industrial Area Remand for 15 days to allow the state to place some witnesses under protection.

The court heard that some of the witnesses were fearing for their lives.

The decision to put Njanja on remand follows a Wednesday application by the DPP to deny him bail.

The prosecution had opposed the suspect's release on bail on grounds that he was likely to threaten state witnesses.

Prosecutor Evelyne Onunga said the charges of attempted murder, whose punishment is life imprisonment, could motivate Njanja to abscond if released on bail.

Onunga told the court the suspect had gone into hiding after committing the offence only to surrender to his lawyer three days later. Those actions should be considered by the court, she said.

Victims' lawyer Dan Maanzo supported the DPP's move to deny the suspect bail pending trial.
